A match between South Korea and China for the Asian section of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers was held at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre on November 21 in Shenzhen, China.
The South Korean team easily secured a 3-0 victory over China. Tottenham Hotspur's star forward, Son Heung Min, was instrumental in South Korea's commanding 3-0 victory, netting two crucial goals (at the 11th and 45th minutes). This win marks South Korea's second consecutive victory in the qualifiers, boosting their chances of clinching a berth in the 2026 World Cup.
However, attention quickly shifted after the game when footage emerged of a Tottenham fan being attacked by Chinese national team fans.
In the video, the fan can be observed donning a Tottenham jersey, emblazoned with Son Heung Min's number '7' and the name 'Won' on the back. It's speculated that the altercation was sparked by the reaction of the Chinese spectators to Son Heung Min's impressive scoring of two goals. Additionally, there are suggestions that the Tottenham fan may have provoked the Chinese national team's supporters. Allegedly one video shows a mob of Chinese fans shouting, "hanjian" (汉奸) at the man, which translates to "traitor to China." You can check out footage and photos of the incident below.
As reported by the Korean soccer magazine, 'Best Eleven,' the incident involving the Tottenham fan was not an isolated event at the game. Another altercation reportedly took place between a Chinese supporter of Tottenham and a fan of the Chinese national team, as depicted in the photo accompanying the tweet below. This series of confrontations highlights a tense atmosphere at the match, raising concerns about fan conduct during such high-stakes international games.
Korean netizens commented, "Well that guy did taunt the other people. He was raising the uniform and waving it around here and there, and people were boo-ing him," "This is so crazy," "That Tottenham fan is Chinese too," "This is so crazy," "Why is he sitting in the area with Chinese national soccer team fans? lol," "That Tottenham fan's support for Son Heung Min is admirable, lol," "That one Tottenham fan, his courage is so crazy, lol," and "That Tottenham fan looks so strong."
