Dispatch has revealed more information to prove how badly Lee Sun Gyun had been extorted in the months leading up to his death.
A report published by the outlet on December 31 KST starts out explaining that while Lee Sun Gyun was a drug case suspect for 71 days, he had been a victim of threats for 105 days.
On October 18, 'Kim,' an entertainment establishment madam, was arrested. She not only had six previous drug convictions. As a repeat offender, she was in a desperate situation where she tried to gain merit with the police by naming others involved.
The Incheon Police Narcotics Crime Investigation Division submitted a progress report on this case with a plan to investigate drug usage incidents involving a 'famous entertainer' and 'employees of a Gangnam entertainment establishment for the top 1%.' The police hastily compiled the report without conducting a proper internal investigation, inflating the situation without verifying facts. (For example, a suspect on the report referred to as 'Han' has been in detention since June, well before the investigation had even started.)
The next day, an article was run by newspaper Gyeonggi Sinmun, the very first article relating to the drug case. While the article did not name Lee Sun Gyun directly, the headline detailed that the names included 'a famous celebrity.' Dispatch used this to show just how quickly information about the investigation had leaked to the media – within just a day of the aforementioned progress report's submission.
They also pointed out a JTBC news report that aired on December 26, where they stated that Lee Sun Gyun had used a straw to inhale a substance he thought was a sleeping pill through his nose. The report was news based on unverified statements from the police. Dispatch felt that the timing of this was not a coincidence at all, as it came out shortly after Lee Sun Gyun had requested a lie detector test.
This pattern has been repeated several times. When criticized for excessive police investigation, anonymous police officer statements would come out. This was previously seen on November 24 after a drug test conducted on Lee Sun Gyun's armpit hair came out negative. Shortly after, KBS ran a news report featuring a recorded conversation between Lee Sun Gyun and 'Kim.'
Dispatch then went in to explain why 'Kim' targeted Lee Sun Gyun. 'Kim' was working with two anonymous accomplices 'Lee' and 'Shin.' 'Lee' is described as 'Kim's younger co-worker at the same adult establishment, while 'Shin' is 'Lee's boyfriend. 'Shin' found out about his girlfriend's drug use and threatened 'Kim,' saying he would report it to the police. He eventually did report it to the Incheon police.
'Kim' intended to silence 'Shin' with money, initially targeting a wealthy artist, 'Jeon,' with extortion. However, 'Jeon' decided to go public with the information that was intended to be held against them. Lee Sun Gyun became the next target. 'Kim' knew that Lee Sun Gyun had no connection to drugs.
A KakaoTalk conversation Dispatch revealed between 'Kim' and accomplice 'Park,' where she comes up with an idea for extortion, reads as follows:
Park: What would a hacker know?
Park: Even if she talks about using drugs,
Park: Lee Sun Gyun isn't affected.
Kim: Oh.
Park: There's no need to provoke unnecessarily.
Kim: That's true.
Kim: Should I tell Sun Gyun oppa that I was hacked, threatened, and swindled for 500 million won?
Park: No, no. Please, please.
'Kim' eventually pinned the hacking crimes on Jeong Da Eun, telling people around her, "Jeong Da Eun has hacking skills. She hacked my phone and threatened me." She even told Lee Sun Gyun, "Jeong Da Eun hacked my phone. She intends to expose the messages and recordings between us."
Below is the hacker's text message to 'Kim,' threatening her and telling her she must pay 100 million won (~$77,250 USD) by that Wednesday or face consequences.
Dispatch then reported that they reached out to Jeong Da Eun regarding this claim. As she had been arrested and was serving jail time when the incident was said to have taken place, she could not have engaged in any threats.
"I'm self-taught in coding so I could develop an app. So, it seems like that made 'Kim' delusionally think of me as a hacker. If I hacked, I'd be rich! All I'm guilty of is coding on XCODE and developing an app," Jeong Da Eun explained in a reply letter. "Everyone's focused on drugs for pleasure, but I got into app development. That's my mistake. It's seriously hilarious but unfair. Also, I got arrested on August 11 and had my phone confiscated, so unfortunately, I couldn't engage in any threats. What a shame…"
In September, 'Kim' prepared for her police investigation by bleaching her hair more than three times, then later that evening, conducted a drug test using a makeshift kit and tested positive for marijuana.
Another day, she pressured Lee Sun Gyun by sending him messages and recorded conversations. She urged him to quickly help her with the money, saying, "The people taking action seem scary."
'Kim' exaggerated the amount the hacker demanded from Lee Sun Gyun, sending a lengthy message stating, "If you give me 300 million (~$231,750 USD), I won't threaten you anymore. I'll clean everything up."
In a conversation with 'Park,' she then hinted that she planned on taking the money for herself, saying, "I demanded 300 million. But I won't give money to the extortionist. So Lee Sun Gyun is screwed." The conversation reads as follows:
Kim: I need to take a break, so I should get 300 million.
Park: Take 300 million and not give it (to the hacker)?
Kim: Yeah. One-month hiatus.
Park: But if you don't give it to the hacker, what happens to Lee Sun Gyun?
Kim: He'll be screwed.
Park: If you take the 300 million and run, won't he sue you?
Kim: Unnie says she's a 300 million punk. She wants 50 million. She's playing hard to get.
Park: Please just solve it for 100 million won. What the hacker wanted was 100 million, not 300 million.
On September 22, 'Kim' managed to receive 300 million won from Lee Sun Gyun's side. She told him, "I won't raise any issues in the future or demand additional money. I won't make any contact or communication with the involved parties," and walked away without delivering the money to the blackmailer.
'Kim's attitude before and after the deposit was different. She claimed that the reason she did not deliver the 300 million won was because the hacker had "chickened out," saying, "The hacker chickened out and didn't show up to take the money. Asking for the 300 million won back? My compensation for the damages is also included here. There's no reason to return it."
The threats began again on October 13, with the hacker saying, "'Kim' took the money and ran, so bring the money again." Initially, they demanded 200 million won, but it dropped to 100 million won, then to 50 million won. Lee Sun Gyun's side tried to contact 'Kim,' but there was no response. 'Kim' mentioned, "The hacker doesn't seem threatening. It seems like they don't have any particular information."
Lee Sun Gyun's side handed over 50 million won to 'Kim's acquaintance, 'Park.' Currently, 'Park' has been arrested as an accomplice in the extortion, as 'Kim' managed to get 300 million won, while 'Park' got 50 million won.
Dispatch wrapped up their new report by sharing their thoughts on the blundered police case, saying, "'Kim' has a record of six drug-related offenses. With that background, all she could strive for was to build a public image. The police were aware of this. The texts she sent to Lee Sun Gyun were a well-crafted 'script.' The police took 'Kim's words as the driving force for their investigation. In reality, that was all they had to rely on. That should have prompted a more thorough verification process—that's the job of the police."
However, the police allowed malicious claims to spread, permitting one-sided statements like "G-Dragon staggered out of the bathroom" or "Lee Sun Gyun inhaled sleeping pills through a straw" to circulate.
"Lee Sun Gyun was not just a suspect in the drug case but also a victim in the extortion case. However, for 71 days, he lived only as a suspect," Dispatch continued. "Would the public remember anything beyond the drug accusations? Even the fact that the straw yielded negative results upon testing was overshadowed."
Meanwhile, Lee Sun Gyun passed away on the morning of December 27.
