Rapper New Champ, also known as Jung Hyun Chul (37), initially sparked controversy by claiming he was the one who voluntarily surrendered to the police for drug use, but subsequently retracted and apologized, stating it was a joke.
On January 22, New Champ took to Instagram to express his regret, stating, "I never anticipated that a casual comment would create such a commotion. I feel sorry and regretful."
On January 19, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul had reported initiating a preliminary investigation into a rapper in his 30s, identified as 'A,' who claimed to have turned themselves in for drug use.
New Champ's comment on a social media post related to the incident added to the controversy. He mentioned, "I released a new song but people called me a poser who didn't even do drugs. So I turned myself in." He added, "I'm not a poser anymore. It was good, though."
The rapper is responding to accusations of being inauthentic or being a "poser," as some of his fans claim he only references drug use in his song lyrics without truly living that lifestyle.
This remark sparked discussions online, prompting New Champ to apologize on his Instagram. He clarified, "The comment I made as a joke has caused such a stir, and I feel so pathetic and regretful for not knowing it would have such consequences. I have not used drugs, ever," expressing apologies to everyone who felt uncomfortable and to potential victims.
