Complaints arose after some ill-mannered audiences freely took photos during a showing of the play 'Wife', starring Girls' Generation's Sooyoung.
According to an anonymous netizen, a male audience member was seen taking "hundreds of photos" of Sooyoung during a scene in the second act of the play, when her character Daisy changes on stage. The audience member pulled out a DSLR and took photos freely without any staff to prevent him from doing so, making some other audiences members believe that photos were permitted. Others soon followed by taking photos on their phones, the anonymous netizen complained.
Generally, it is always illegal to film or photograph any part of a stage play. In response to the above incident, many netizens expressed their concerns that the production company of this particular play was not doing enough to warn ill-mannered audiences from such actions.
The production company has since issued a statement regarding the incident, explaining, "We were not able to spot the audiences taking illegal photographs as they were sitting in blind spots. We will supplement this production with additional personnel to prevent the issue from happening again. We will also take measures to properly warn audiences, including foreigners, that filming and photography is prohibited."
Meanwhile, the play 'Wife' is currently showing at the LG Arts Center in Gangseo-gu, Seoul. It follows the stories of women across four generations, from 1959 through 2046, including queer couples living as minorities in society.
